TOC Blueprint Featured in AIA Seattle Forum Magazine

The Fall 2010 issue of AIA Seattle Forum magazine features an article on green transportation by former Seattle City Council member Peter Steinbrueck, and Sara Nikolic, lead author of Transit-Oriented Communities: A Blueprint for Washington State, a 76-page report published in 2009 by Futurewise, GGLO, and Transportation Choices Coalition. Read the whole article here, or see also the version published on Crosscut (with lots of reader comments).

The article extracts heavily from the Blueprint report, and advocates for transit-oriented communities as a key strategy for greening the region's transportation system.  Included is a discussion of the award-winning Burien Town Square project, for which GGLO provided planning, urban design, architecture, and landscape architecture.

Summing up their recommded holistic approach, Nikolic and Steinbrueck write, "Clearly, the solution lies in rethinking transportation through better integration of land use and transportation policy…Transportation policies must change to consider not only the mode, but also the multiple benefits that can be accrued, such as reduced GHG emissions, enhanced mobility, stronger local economies, healthier environments, and livable, walkable communities.”
