A round of applause to Bertschi School and the Restorative Design Collective on their 2012 What Makes It Green Award from AIA Seattle COTE. Awarded biannually to the best green design projects in the Northwest and Pacific region, the Bertschi Living Science Classroom was one of four Award Winners in the built category. 27 projects were entered overall.
The award celebrates the achievements and the interdisciplinary teamwork required to meet the 2030 Challenge®.
"This represents both the most challenging and rewarding project that we have taken on to-date, and we are proud to be a part of something that is a catalyst for truly moving toward a restorative future," said Principal, Mark Sindell.
The Bertschi School Living Science building, located in Seattle’s Capitol Hill Neighborhood, is the first project in the world built to the Living Building Challenge (LBC) v2.0 standards, and the first urban project built to the standard. This elementary school wing, collaboratively designed with the students, follows LBC requirements that includes 20 Imperatives. The most important aspect of the project is that all the sustainable features are visible and functional for students to learn ecological concepts that can become intrinsic values for future generations.
As one juror stated, the project is 'causing a ripple effect in the Seattle community', showing that these types of high sustainable projects are possible.
