It is with deep sadness that GGLO acknowledges and mourns the
recent death of Paul Schell.
As a long-time mentor and client, Paul will be a greatly
missed friend. Prior to the formation of
Gaylord, Grainger, Libby, O’Brien-Smith in 1986, the young partners, while at
the Bumgardner Architects, had worked
directly with Paul and his Cornerstone Development Company on the six-block
Waterfront Center, in Seattle, and RiverPlace in Portland, Oregon. With his
encouragement, and his belief in the new firm, GGLO’s work with him included
subsequent phases of RiverPlace, the Inn at Langley and the Langley Cottages,
the Inn at Ludlow Bay, Friday Harbor House, and numerous project studies that
were part of his broader dreams for Seattle and the region.
He was always enthusiastically “hands on” and reveled in a
collaborative design process, always including Pam in their hospitality
projects. His vision of a thriving living and working downtown community
transformed Seattle with renovations and re-development along First and Western
Avenues. Then home to aging, empty buildings with questionable retail, the new
urban neighborhood set the stage for the relocations of Benaroya Hall, SAM, and
the Four Seasons Hotel.
Paul Schell was a renaissance man, an attorney, a developer
with soul, Dean of UW School of Architecture & Urban Planning, Port of
Seattle Commissioner, City of Seattle Mayor, arts patron, raconteur, dreamer
and visionary. We pay tribute to Paul
and offer our heartfelt gratitude for his many contributions to our community
and to the Northwest.
