2/23/2009Historic Renovation of The Cobb achieves LEED® Silver certification
The GGLO renovated Cobb Building, at the corner of 4th and University, has achieved LEED Silver certification.
The beautiful, Beaux Arts structure, with its tall ceilings, abundant operable windows and narrow floor plate, was well suited for a conversion to a 91-unit mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. A local icon, with its distinctive terra cotta Indian heads, proudly stands as the last remnant of a grand turn of the century vision to create a “city within a city” on the 10-acre Metropolitan Tract in the heart of downtown Seattle. GGLO worked with the client, Unico, and builder, Lease Crutcher Lewis, to convert the former medical and dental building into green luxury apartments. "Building green has become part of Unico's DNA," said CEO Dale Sperling. "It's all about creating healthy and productive environments for the people who live and work in our buildings. We knew greening the Cobb would be a challenge, but we balanced historic renovation with pursuit of LEED and made sustainable attainable. It was simply the right thing to do."  The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.
