The Seattle Housing Authority has embarked on an ambitious and exciting mission of creating a new mixed-income, mixed-use urban neighborhood at Yesler Terrace that is tailored to meet the needs, aspirations and lifestyles of Seattleites in the 21st Century. The development provides a unique opportunity to simultaneously promote social, economic, and environmental resiliency through design. The Master Plan lays out a vision for streets, walkways, open space and buildings that knit a community over the site’s steeply sloping 34 acres.
The design of our Built Environment in the 21st Century demands a collaborative, systems based approach to solve the evolving issues and complexities of our urban communities. A multi-disciplinary panel including Landscape Architect, Architect, and Interior Designer will present an integrated design process, refined over the past 10 years by GGLO, focused on placemaking and Design for the Human Experience.The panel will provide project examples that break the traditional model of ‘working in silo’s’ and leverage systems-based thinking, collaborative design, and cutting edge graphics to deliver projects that are sustainable, distinctive, and based on creating sustainable places for people. We will share ‘lessons learned’ and engage the audience in a dialogue centered on the expanding roles of landscape architects.
